Who might need a neuropsychological evaluation?
Family members, teachers, physicians and even clients themselves may recognize signs of cognitive dysfunction, such as difficulty remembering new information, getting lost, falling behind in school, difficulty learning to read, and struggling with social interactions. Our staff can help with questions of diagnosis, such as, "Should I be worried that my child is not able to read yet?" or "Does my mom have Alzheimers' disease or is this normal aging?" We can also address questions regarding what actions to take next, such as "My child's teacher thinks my child has ADHD. How do I get an evaluation and what do I do?" or "Should my aging parent be living alone?" or "Could I go back to the work I used to do before my stroke?"
In conducting an evaluation, we may collaborate with families, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physicians, nursing staff, social workers, and other professionals.
What is involved in an evaluation?
We have conveniently-located offices in both San Diego and Orange counties. Our neuropsychological evaluations typically involve three appointments that fit your schedule. First, we will meet with a client and/or family members for a one-hour initial consultation, where we will discuss the issues and briefly review the records you provide, such as medical and school records. If a comprehensive evaluation is warranted, we will schedule an evaluation day for the client. The evaluation day may involve an interview and formal psychological and neuropsychological testing to assess any or all of the following:
- academic/pre-academic achievement
- language and language-related processes
- attention and concentration capacities
- learning and memory skills
- planning and organizational skills
- social-emotional functioning
We will then assimilate information from the interview, records and testing. Our third meeting will be a one-hour feedback session, where we will review all of the findings and recommendations in detail and give you an opportunity for further discussion and questions. You will receive a comprehensive written report that includes all of our information review, test results, findings and recommendations that you may share with healthcare professionals, school staff, and other important care providers.
