The Concussion Clinic at Advanced Neurobehavioral Health of Southern California offers concussion assessment and management services for children, adolescents, and adults.
What is a concussion?
A concussion can result after a sudden blow to the head or somewhere else on the body that causes jarring of the head. After being hit, the person may demonstrate loss of consciousness, amnesia, and confusion. While some people believe that loss of consciousness is required for a diagnosis of a concussion, less than 10% of people with concussions actually demonstrate a loss of consciousness. Commonly reported symptoms following a concussion include the following:
Headache
Dizziness
Blurred Vision
Feeling Slowed Down
Nausea
Vomiting
Balance Problems
Fatigue
Sensitivity to light or noise
Emotionality
Irritability
Fogginess
Attention/Concentration Difficulties
Memory Problems
Sleep Disturbance
Drowsiness
It is important to receive immediate medical care following a suspected concussion. After you have completed a medical evaluation, the Concussion Clinic at Advanced Neurobehavioral Health of Southern California can assist in post-injury assessment and management of concussions.
Concussion Assessment and Management
We utilize a computerized battery of neurocognitive tests called ImPACT™ for baseline and post-concussion testing, and Dr. Roger Perez is a Credentialed ImPACT™ Consultant. Following a concussion and subsequent medical examination, serial post-injury assessments and clinical evaluations are conducted at the Concussion Clinic to track recovery from the injury. Based on the results of the evaluations, guidelines for post-concussion rehabilitation will be developed, including initial exertion limitations and return to play decisions, school/employment restrictions or accommodations, and referrals for additional evaluations or treatments if necessary.
Sports Concussion Services
The Concussion Clinic provides services to school and university sports teams and independent sporting programs. Our sports concussion services begin with a concussion prevention and education program geared toward student athletes and athletic staff, followed by pre-season baseline testing. Post-injury assessment and management services are available for athletes with sports-related concussions, as well as ongoing consultation for return to play. Parents who are interested in individual baseline testing or post-injury evaluations for their child/adolescent athlete may contact the Concussion Clinic directly.
Acute Concussion Services
The Concussion Clinic at Advanced Neurobehavioral Health of Southern California also accepts referrals from local medical groups for patients who have sustained recent concussions. Individuals who are seeking further assessment and management services following a concussion resulting from falls or other types of accidents can also contact the Concussion Clinic to set up an appointment.
Comprehensive Neuropsychological Evaluations
You may be referred for a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation at Advanced Neurobehavioral Health if you demonstrate complex or persistent symptoms from a concussion, or if you have a history cognitive and behavioral difficulties after sustaining multiple concussions.
